Teaching Responsibility to Land
Teaching responsibility to land is essential to continuity.
Continuity of Tsm’syen law depends on deliberate teaching of responsibility to laxyuup. Responsibility is learned through guidance, participation, and example, not assumption.
Teaching responsibility includes:
- understanding ayaawx governing land and use,
- learning house and clan responsibilities,
- observing lawful conduct on the land,
- correction and instruction when mistakes occur.
Elders, house members, and leaders share responsibility for teaching. Learning is gradual and aligned with readiness.
Failure to teach responsibility weakens continuity. Without transmission, authority and law erode over time.
Continuity is sustained through teaching, not inheritance alone.
