Elders May Assist in Interpreting Law in Modern Contexts Category: Tsm’syen Law Page status: Working

Purpose

This principle recognizes the role of Elders in helping apply existing law to present-day situations. Interpretation supports continuity while respecting established authority.

General Principle

Elders may assist in interpreting law in modern contexts.

Function

Elders draw upon memory, precedent, and lived knowledge. They help clarify how ayaawx applies when circumstances appear new.

Limits

Elders do not create new law. Elders do not override houses or clans. Interpretation must remain grounded in ayaawx and adaawx.

Responsibility

Those receiving guidance remain responsible for their decisions and conduct.

Witness

Interpretation gains strength when shared and remembered publicly.
